Finding Your Travel Style- St. Kitts & Nevis

As I sit on the back porch of our beachfront suite at the Park Hyatt in St. Kitts, nestled in an Adirondack chair weathered by the ocean breeze, I watch my daughter create a home for her new hermit crab, “Hermina,” using a coconut, seashells, and a Carib beer bottle cap. As I gaze out over the ocean, with palm trees gracefully bent toward the sea, a deep sense of contentment washes over me. I realize that, after months of family travels, I’ve finally found what I’ve been seeking in a travel style but couldn’t quite grasp until now.

Our stay at the Park Hyatt St. Kitts, perched at the end of a serene peninsula with stunning views of Nevis, has been everything we’ve hoped for and more. This peaceful corner of paradise is a hidden gem, with a subtle entrance down a side road that hints at the understated elegance within. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by the vibrant sounds of J’l Valon’s Masquerades, a local dance troupe clad in colorful traditional costumes, singing and dancing to rhythmic drumbeats. The warm welcome continued as we were greeted with rum punch, whisked through check-in, and escorted to our suite—a cozy, beachside bungalow featuring separate living, bedroom, bathroom, living room, and dressing area. Though other suites offer expansive ocean views and private plunge pools, we loved the ease of walking directly from our back porch to the resort’s amenities. Since we were celebrating my daughter’s birthday, we were delighted to find a beautifully decorated chocolate cake and cookies waiting for her in the room—a sweet surprise that made her feel extra special.

Family Fun with a Relaxed Twist

During our 5-night stay, we balanced relaxation with a mix of fun activities. Every other day we spent our time at the resort, enjoying kayaking, movies on the beach, game nights, and lounging poolside. Our kids (ages 10 and 12) were especially thrilled by the floating trampoline in the ocean and the kids’ club, where they could join in arts and crafts, make bracelets, or meet new friends. Normally, they avoid kids’ clubs, but the small, friendly setting of this one made it a place they wanted to visit. This gave my husband and me a chance to unwind at the adults-only pool or simply enjoy the view from our back porch. With access to the resort’s spa amenities, we found the perfect blend of family fun and adult relaxation.

Beyond the Resort: Authentic Adventures in St. Kitts and Nevis

While the resort offered plenty to keep us entertained, we love to step outside the gates and explore a destination’s true character. For this trip, I connected with Kenny from EZ Taxi and Tours on Nevis. Kenny shared insider tips, such as which water taxi to take from Reggae Beach—a short walk from the hotel. We could have taken the water taxi directly from the resort’s dock, but by walking ten minutes to the beach, we saved over $100 on the taxi trip. On Nevis, Kenny treated us to a personalized, 3-hour tour that included an introduction to the island via song (he’s a talented singer!), a visit to a historic sugar mill, a stunning plantation-turned-hotel (Golden Rock), the local hot springs, and a stop at Sunshine’s Bar for their famous Killer Bee drink, which packed a punch!

The Four Seasons, though not part of the standard tour, was a must-see for us. A split stay between the Park Hyatt St. Kitts and the Four Seasons Nevis would be the ultimate luxury experience. The Four Seasons boasts manicured grounds, inviting pools, beach bars, and stunning views of the horizon dotted with yachts. Whether you’re spending a week, a few nights, or simply renting a cabana for the day, the Four Seasons epitomizes luxury and is the perfect place to see and to be seen. After our time at the Four Seasons, Kenny returned us to the water taxi for what should have been the perfect end to a perfect day—until we realized we’d left a bag at Sunshine’s. With the water taxi departing in 10 minutes, Kenny quickly called the bar and arranged for the bag to be delivered to the pier. My husband decided to wait for the bag and to take the next taxi while the kids and I departed. As we pulled away from the dock, we saw my husband sprinting toward the boat—just in time! The bag had been delivered to the dock and the staff had radioed the boat to turn around. A fellow passenger shared that “on this island, no one steals. If you did, everyone would know.” This deep-rooted trust and community spirit captured the essence of St. Kitts and Nevis. Everyone we met on the islands was warm, kind, and genuinely welcoming.

A Magical Dolphin Encounter

On the eve of our departure, we celebrated my daughter’s birthday with an unforgettable experience at the Dolphin Discovery Center. We’ve typically shied away from such encounters, but this one felt different, as the experience took place in the ocean, and not a pool, and it included a special element that I had not seen anywhere else. The kids could only participate if the adults did too, so we joined the Royal Dolphin Discovery experience together. Our first encounter was with Dante, a playful dolphin, who was full of fun, with kisses and dance moves. All the dolphins we met were so well cared for and absolutely loved their jobs! The real magic happened when we swam out to the bay, waiting for dolphins, Jia and Angel to appear. As they came around us, we took hold of their dorsal fins, and they glided us through the water. If that weren’t enough, we again swam out into the bay and floated with our feet out behind us. Jia and Angela then came up behind us again, but this time, they pushed us out of the water with their noses and swam with us completely out of the water— it was a childhood dream of being a dolphin trainer come true! The joy on our children’s faces mirrored my own as we experienced the dolphins’ incredible grace and power together.

The Grand Finale: A Private Cruise Around St. Kitts and Nevis

As if the dolphin encounter wasn’t enough, we still had one final adventure: a private cruise with Capt. Mike and his crew from Orange Cat Charters. We set out on a 3-hour journey around the island, snorkeling along a shipwreck, spotting octopuses, beautiful fish, and even a spotted eagle ray. The crew made us feel like family, sharing stories of the island’s history while introducing us to the rich marine life that surrounds St. Kitts and Nevis. The cherry on top was spotting sea turtles on our way back to the hotel, where they dropped us off directly at the Park Hyatt pier. Back at the resort, we lingered on the beach, recounting our amazing day and watching the sunset over the ocean, reluctant to leave this paradise.
